Falls out of windows might not seem like a huge danger, but for parents with young children, it definitely is a real danger. There are several deaths each year from children falling out of windows, and thousands are injured seriously enough to need a hospital visit. The sad thing is that it is fairly simple to prevent this from happening.
The first thing to keep in mind is fairly obvious – don’t leave children alone in a room with an open window. While it might seem like a given, this is a common reason why children get hurt. If you need to have an open window in your home, there are a few ways in which you can either limit access to the window or prevent it from opening enough to let a child through.
A bug screen is not a good preventive measure, since it won’t hold up against the weight of your child. They could give a false sense of security, and a child trying to get a good view of something could lean up against it and fall through.
If at all possible, the safest way to have a window open is when you can open one that is out of reach for your children.
